I disabled the old userpoints module (not sure which version it was), then moved it out of the modules directory. Then, I put in the new userpoints module (4.7-2.2) and enabled it. I then ran update.php. When I try to add points for a user manually, it tells me that I successfully added those points to that user, but I don't see this reflected in the list of users by points (no one has points now and I see no one on the list)

It appears that either something was wrong with my Drupal installation or the way I installed the module. I probably should have run update.php before enabling the new userpoints module. In any event, manually creating the appropriate databases did the trick.
