In order to retain author information when importing content, it's crucial that the user IDs match. Right now, user_import assigns user IDs automatically, but that doesn't do any good when what used to be user ID 30 is now user ID 2.

It would be cool to (optionally) map a field to user ID for this reason.

This is a much needed feature for all of us who are using User Import as part of a strategy to move sites into Drupal from strange/custom CMSs...
