There is no use of the old Drupal core variable_get() in 8.x-4.x, and hasn't been for years. The only place it shows up is in one UNPORTED module (uc_authorizenet) which CAN'T be enabled, so it is impossible for this to cause a problem. (uc_authorizenet actually DEFINES its own version of variable_get() as a substitute for the core function which was removed in D8, so even if you do end up enabling this module it will NOT fail.)
