Is there any intention to revive support for this? Being able to link to a chosen tab would be very useful.

I am using with CCK Fieldgroup Tab 6.x-1.0

This is possible already...
In admin/settings/tabs

Set [Descriptive tab URLs: ] To enabled

Then when your viewing a tab set notice the urls that are embedded into each tab

http://localhost.mysite.test/something/somepage#sometab

Open another window or tab and drop that link in it .. you will see it loads the page with that tab displaying.
