Wouldn't it be great if you could have a page where you could see the status updates of your friends, another for the status updates of your family and yet another for your coworkers? Just an idea

vip_sa, I have been working on a project for a client that requires similar functionality - I was able to implement that functionality into the site using a combination of Views, Panels, and User Relationships. It takes time to figure out the right approach and trial and error and to get things right - but it is doable.

What @taylor_a_barnette said -- this should be currently possible and Statuses does come with UR integration (though by default it does not distinguish by relationship type).
