If you turn on the spaces blog feature in a group, and set the homepage to Blog, but don't have the Admin module installed, you don't see any changes. Turning on the Admin module makes the homepage change.
This might be a general spaces issue, but this is the first place I have discovered it.

Hmm, I changed the title, because I can turn Admin module back off, and the home page continues to show up. So it isn't a direct dependency on Admin, but rather something that happened when I enabled the module.

Hm, I can't seem to reproduce this.

Could it be that you are expecting the homepage setting to affect what you see on group-prefix/node/5 where 5 is the group nid? Currently we don't affect the node view of group nodes and you will only see the selected home page if you go to group-prefix.
