While entering a new issue and referencing in the body of the issue to another issue via [#123] doesn't work. Am I missing a module or an input format?

Basically I would like an issue referenced in the body of a node be automatically parsed, colorized like issues referenced / tracked on drupal.org. Any pointers would be very appreciated.

Found it!
I needed to enable "Project Issue to link filter" at admin/settings/filters/ for the input format I use.

Please don't set the initial status on an issue to a closed status.

Yeah, you need to go configure the input format that you normally use. It'll be at admin/settings/filters, then click edit on the input format that you normally use (for OA, that'd be Markdown). Then turn on the "Project Issue to link filter" checkbox and hit save. Should work after that.

Initial status was active, not closed. After I figured out how to do it, I came back, updated the issue with new comments and changed the status to Closed (works as designed).

Now you seemed to have activated again. I will leave it to you to close then.
