Sort threads by rating

I know Drupal's core comment module makes life difficult but what exactly needs to be done to get the highest rated comments to float to the top without breaking the thread?

Hacking the core is totally acceptable, in my opinion. I think the option of showing posts marked as "funny" or "interesting" would also be nice.
