Problem/Motivation

It's really useful, indeed, absolutely necessary for users registering with a code to be assigned a specific role and it's been great in D7 to assign different roles based on the code used.

Are there any plans to port the sub-module to D8 (I'm actually installing on 9) so this functionality is available?
If not, could anyone suggest any work arounds?

This is trivial to do with Rules when and if regcode ports Rules integration to D8/D9. See #3224820: [meta] Rules integration and please comment there if you want this to happen.

I don't see a need to port the regcode_roles submodule, because that is just redundant. Rules can do a much better job of this because Rules will let you use the regcode and ANYTHING ELSE to decide what roles, if any, should be assigned to a new user. Rules allows you to grant roles based on regcode, country, language, or any other user property, and allows you to take actions other than simply assigning roles when a specific regcode is used. For example, you could email a notification when a regcode is used. Etc.

So my preference would be to port the Rules integration, then you get all of these features for free without a separate submodule. Because regcode is not actively maintained, it will be a constant uphill fight to develop new features for regcode. It will be far more productive to integrate with Rules and get those features for free.
