During export, the default tab value is converted into a bool. I was wondering why the default tab value wasn't correctly being applied when exporting via features, until I realized the default tab value in the exported code was set to TRUE, and not the tab index value. After some digging, I discovered that for whatever reason, ctools (6.x-1.8) converts tinyints into boolean. The function ctools_export_object has the following code snippet:
if ($info['type'] == 'int') {
$value = (isset($info['size']) && $info['size'] == 'tiny') ? (bool) $value : (int) $value;
}
To solve this, I had to remove the 'size' key from the default_tab field in the quicktabs schema. To maintain consistency with the schema, I also altered the default_tab field's type to be 'int(10) unsigned)' in the database.
If I get any spare time, I will figure out how to create a patch for this, but I wanted to report this now in case anyone runs into the same issue.

katbailey commentedDarn - I could have sworn I fixed that, but maybe I only fixed it in the D7 branch :-(
I will backport the fix as soon as I get a chance.
