Hi, stumbled across this project a few weeks ago and now I'm using a 0.6 VM for work on a daily basis.
I was playing with the VM build script to make my own and I added simple dialogues for optional components. I thought you might find it useful. Attached is a diff of changes and an additional include file I used.
To speed up the build process I would do the prep/clean process in the order:
clean
update
install virtual
upgrade
That would stop the upgrade downloading unnecessary packages but there may be reasons why it may not work.
It would be interesting to see how big a basic version of quickstart would be. Without eclipse, gimp, rabbitvcs, solr. Might try it later.
I was also playing around with an ImageMagick script to display text over the background. Command is:
convert /usr/share/backgrounds/warty-final-ubuntu.png \( -fill white -background transparent -font /usr/share/fonts/truetype/freefont/FreeMono.ttf -pointsize 16 label:@text.txt -bordercolor 'rgba(0,0,0,0.2)' -border 16x16 -geometry '+400+300' \) -composite qs-bg.jpg
This will overlay a text file (text.txt) over the default Ubuntu background image. If you set the resulting image (qs-bg.jpg) as the desktop background and run the script again, the changed file is recognised and updated on the desktop.
Thought it would be a good way to display readme text, common drush commands, currently set up sites etc.
I've also encountered a bug with Ubuntu not detecting/loading the VirtualBox sound hardware. Nothing to do with the script but others might have the same problem. I'll post a fix if I figure it out.
Cheers,
Liam

MichaelCole commentedHi Liam, thanks for the excellent feedback.
My goal for the project is to make a downloadable pre-packaged development environment - the scripts in CVS are really for a packager to use before building a torrent. If I make more than one image for download, it will get confusing. I think if I offered just the scripts, nobody would get to the end (it takes about 2 hour for me to build an image - if everything works!)
I also would prefer to ship only one IDE, but the market hasn't settled on Netbeans or Eclipse yet. As much as I like Netbeans, I can't push it as a single solution after Oracle bought it. They may abandon it.
Anyways, check out the new 0.7 version on the project page. It's got email debugging and I added a profiler.
Hope you like it Liam,
Mike
