I tried downloading the new amd64 version, but when I try to start it I get a black screen. If I shut down and restart the VM, I get prompted with a screen where I can choose between regular, recovery, or memory test modes, but choosing either regular or recovery proceed to the same black screen. I've tried leaving the screen up for quite a while, but it doesn't seem to help.
For what it's worth, I'm running the latest version of VirtualBox under Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. I found some threads on the VirtualBox forums detailing similar problems, but most seemed to be using Ubuntu as the host OS.
Anyone else having trouble getting the amd64 version of Quickstart running under VirtualBox 4.0.8 r71778 on Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit? Any troubleshooting ideas?
For the time being, I'm using the i386 version instead.

7wonders commentedI had the exact same issue but for me it was easy to fix. Im guessing this is quite a common issue so it might be worth a note on the main page.
1. Power off the machine and then go to the machine settings.
2. Version on mine was set to ubuntu, I changed it to Ubuntu (64 bit).
3. Restart your PC and click delete on boot up to enter BIOS.
4. Enable Virtualisation technology (on my new PC its Intel Virtualisation technology that by default was disabled).
Save changes and start up :)

7wonders commentedActually I have to take it back a little bit. The above fix did work and then today (after making no changes!!) it is back to the black screen situation as described above. hmmm. Will do some more digging this evening and post up my findings.

I did fix this in the image I am uploading to Amazon right now.

MichaelCole commentedFYI, I have instability on my machines with more than one virtual CPU.

MichaelCole commentedHello, I found a note that IO APIC has to be turned on for 64-bit guests. This wasn't the case in the 1.0 downloads before today. Double-check this in Settings -> System page if it's unstable.

michelsmith commentedHi,
I fixed this issue, I too had the same problem. Here is how I did it.
1) Reboot and press F8
2) Select "Repair my computer"
3) Select the keyboard layout and lanugage
4) When you reach system recovery tools, select System restore.
5) Select the restore point when it was working fine and restart the computer.
That's it....
If you do not have the system restore points, try startup repair.
