It would be nice if this module was based on roles similar to simple access. So instead of making a node private, the node would have the roles listed and then you can click the ones you want to have access.

I think mainly because this module seems to be more stable, I'm using Drupal 6 now, so neither of these are an option I had to make due with node access but am also waiting for node access control

Another option would be something like content_access - http://drupal.org/project/content_access

The Private module isn't meant to do all sorts of fancy stuff, so I'm marking this as won't fix.
