I think it would be quite practical to have the option to bulk generate redirects during Pathauto's bulk operations.

This would of course require that Redirect is present and it should be optional behavior. But given the history of integration between Pathauto and Path_Redirect, this seems intuitive and broadly useful for sane alias change management.

The second sentence makes sense to me but I am less sure about the first.

Is your point that we should simply replace the current 6.x functionality for path_redirect with calls to the newer/cooler redirect module?

If so, then yes definitely. I think we should let the modules stabilize a bit first.

The first sentence already works as long as we have the proper redirect support.

I think the earlier issue you filed in #971552: Integration with Redirect Module Not Working (or not present) can cover this as well, so merging this issue into that one.
