Problem/Motivation

For one, it is not visually represented in the content itself. If "Do nothing. Leave the old alias intact." is set, the "Generate automatic URL alias" checkbox is checked anyway even though it has no effect at all, when updating a node.

I understand that this checkbox only handles the "Automatic part" (generate automatically or generate manually via input), but when checked, there should be some sort of indicator saying, that the URL alias won't get updated, since I set "Do nothing. Leave the old alias intact." as the global setting.

The second part is the "symbiosis" with the redirect module. From the description alone:

What should Pathauto do when updating an existing content item which already has an alias? Considering installing the Redirect module to get redirects when your aliases change.

It is not obvious, that the redirect module will create redirects automatically from the old deleted content to the new one, if "Create a new alias. Delete the old alias." is checked. And I am not even sure how the redirect module behaves with the other options. That should be cleared up as well, please.

Steps to reproduce

Proposed resolution

Overhaul the "Update action" setting e.g. through adding better explanations and an indicator on the content edit form.

+1! I'm pretty sure many users don't really understand this or use the wrong setting.
