Hi,
I wonder if you would consider an extension to the pathauto module to allow other modules to change the pattern, tokens or values right before the alias is created. I.e. sth. like:

foreach (module_implements('pathauto_alter_alias') as $name) {
  $function = $name .'_pathauto_alter_alias';
  $function($placeholders, $pattern);
}

  // Replace the placeholders with the values provided by the module,
  // and optionally lower-case the result
  $alias = str_replace($placeholders['tokens'], $placeholders['values'], $pattern);

in the pathauto_create_alias function.

A use case for this is an extension of the language sections module we are currently thinking about. The language section module currently provides a filter for node bodies that allows content like

=de=Dieser Text ist nur zu sehen, wenn die aktuelle Sprache Deutsch ist
=en=This text is only shown if the current language is english
=qq=
Text after qq is shown always.

and removes language-specific parts not matching the current language when showing a node. This allows multilingual nodes without i18n and/or translating nodes, i.e. all content within one node (which has many advantages).

Now we would like to extend this to handle node and menu titles, too. While this is quite easy to implement for showing nodes/menus/breadcrums/views etc., pathauto is a problem, because if a node title is "=de=Deutscher Titel=en=English title", then pathauto would take this whole string as value for a node title pattern.

An alter-alias-hook like above would allow to change the pattern or the values in any way wanted, and allow e.g. the language sections module to remove all parts but the default language from the title.

What do you think about such a hook? Would it harm to add those lines?

cu,
Frank

Title: Chance for a hook_pathauto_alter_alias? » Implementation of hook_pathauto_alias_alter
Issue tags: +custom hooks

This can be better implemented with a hook_pathauto_alias_alter() hook like explained in the drupal_alter() documentation.

Title: Implementation of hook_pathauto_alias_alter » Add hook_pathauto_alias_alter

FYI we now have hook_pathauto_clean_alias, although it still needs to be documented, and the patch to add hook_path_alter() is still RTBC for D7.

Example for hook_pathauto_alias_alter

// to remove turkish character from urls
function hook_pathauto_alias_alter(&$alias, &$context) {
$alias = removeAccents($alias);
}

function removeAccents($str) {

@nehajn: Or you could just enable the Transliteration module
