I'm new to Panels, and I must be making this way harder than it should be. I've set up a simple panel connected with the 'Node Template' page that came as a preset with the module. I can now change the layout for a specific node type (say, 'Page', or 'Story').

However, I can't seem to figure out how to change the actual 'node/add' page -- the 'Create Content' page that shows all the different accessible content types to a user. I tried adding a variant on the same 'Node Template' page and included a Selection rule indicating the panel would be accessed if the current path was 'add'. This seems logical (to me!) since the pattern for this template seems to be 'node/%node'.

It doesn't work.

I my (naive) mind, I should be able to grab this page and control the output (i.e., the list of content types and their respective descriptions). Am I way off the mark?

The "Node template" is for display of nodes. There's a separate page (or "task"), to override the edit page, called "Node add/edit form".
