Maybe you'r better off with the books module for this kind of behavior...

There is a filter which creates a ToC based on the header tags in the body. You might want to check it out.

I like the last option idea. it works well. Except I would like to have the Table of contents display at the top of both pages and show all the information from both pages. Is there a way to define something to appear accross all pagination pages?
