Append popup div to div external to ol map [#2431169]

Hi All,

I'm trying to mimic the functionality found in the Leaflet Popup Outside module - where the popup content can be displayed in an external div of your choosing.

Currently, the Popup behaviour appends the popup content within the OL map div.

I've tried modifying the behaviour such that the popup is appended to an external div with no luck: the div does get created, but there is no content within it. At this point I'm wondering if OL is capable of this at all?

Can anyone provide any suggestions/direction with this?

I've scrapped together the functionality I was looking for and put it all in a sandbox project here:

I basically swapped out some code in the popup behaviour to get what I needed. I know there are a lot of things that can be improved with the approach I took, please feel free to make suggestions.
