Is it possible to make the calendar events a different color per author or any other way that would allow events to be differentiated?

Right now they're all blue and the whole thing just sort of blends together. Different colors per author would be a big usability enhancement.

There's info on that on the full calendar documentation pages here: https://drupal.org/node/1237784
You will have to create a new event content type and adjust the color here: ../admin/config/user-interface/colors/node

I think you mean "create a new event type taxonomy"...

But yes, Argus is correct about where to set the colors. You can color based on taxonomy, space, etc.
