I started using the import module, an alternate aggregator which turns news items from a feed into nodes. So, now in my notify emails I get a list of all the new news items, which far overwhelm the original content on my site. It would be extremely helpful if notify had an option to select types of nodes to omit from the update emails -- so one could turn off notification for news items, for example.

Some time between 2004 and now, a panel named "Notification by node type" was added to Notify. This fixes this issue for the maintained versions of Notify (i.e. D6 and D7). D4 and D5 is no longer supported.

And just to pick a nit: Notify did never conflict with import. The problem was that import happened to create content that the OP did not want to be notified about.
