Only add to top-level subqueues?

I was wondering if there was any way to do this, or if I have to write some code of my own:

I have a taxonomy vocab like this:

animals
-dog
-cat
plants
-rose

When I view a node tagged as 'dog', there's an 'add to dog subqueue' link in my links area. But I don't want anything in my child-term-subqueues. Is it possible to override this to 'add to animals subqueue'?

If I could skip the child subqueues altogether, that'd be good too, as long as the abovementionened functionality works. :)
