It would be very helpful to styling if the contents of the Create new child area had classes; the content type names could be used for this.

For example:

<div class="newchild"><span class="label">Create new child</span>
  <a ... class="add-child article odd first">Article</a>
  <span class="separator">|</span>
  <a ... class="add-child basic-page even">Basic page</a>
  <span class="separator">|</span>
  <a ... class="add-child event odd">Event</a></div>
  <span class="separator">|</span>
  <a ... class="add-child faq even last">FAQ</a></div>
</div>

The base CSS could be something like:

div.newchild {display:block;}
div.newchild span.label,
div.newchild a.add-child,
div.newchild span.separator {display:inline;}
div.newchild span.label {padding:0 1em;}
div.newchild span.separator {padding:0 .5em;}

A couple of the things that we could then do with CSS are:

  • Selectively show and hide options based on the active contexts.
  • Make the links look like other "buttons" that are available to our authors.

I'll try to figure out what code needs to be added, but I'm new to PHP and someone more skilled would be needed to make a patch of it.

Does this interest anyone?

OK, I found where it goes: function theme_nodehierarchy_new_child_links in nodehierarchy.module); however, it's over my head. I can probably find code that does something similar to what I'm thinking of in some other module, but I won't have time to spend on the search for a while.
