There doesn't seem to be any readme or howto documentation.

Can anybody provide some quick steps explaining the basics of how to use this module?

I know this is an old one, but I can give you a basic outline.

Create node A that the user does not have access to (using some other node access method)
Create node B that the user DOES have access to (using some other node access method)
In node A create a Node reference which points to node B.
Now users who had access to node B also have access to node A.

(When you're setting up the node reference field you should see the Node access node reference config options)

As to the specifics, well that depends on your own site's intentions and what other techniques you use to grant node access.
