I have a setup with with the following:
Node type A
-- User reference field using nodeaccess-userreference

Node type B
-- Node reference field referencing Node type A using nodeaccess_nodereference

When Node B references a Node A the node is shown correctly
When Node B has a empty reference field (which is the default scenario) the node is not shown and an Acces denied is thrown.

Is it a setting to let nodes with empty reference field be shown to all? Or is this a feature request?

Try using a newer version of the module, there is an option in the field config that allows you to change this behaviour.
