I'm trying to browse the CVS to test out CCK support for version 6, but I can only see dead files in there? Have I missed something?

The HEAD only shows dead files, use DRUPAL-6--1 branch.

You can also download it at Node import project page → View all releases → node_import 6.x-1.x-dev. This tar.gz is a snapshot, generated once a day only.

Lastly you can use CVS to checkout the DRUPAL-6--1 branch: http://drupal.org/handbook/cvs.
