while 7.x-2.x is very stable and functional on my production site, i was wondering is it about time to upgrade to the 3.x branch? is it stable enough?

Not yet. We should have a release ready for testing this week. It will be roughly 50% feature complete.

As for an upgrade path, I don't think there will be one anytime soon. The changes were so drastic in every way that it may not work. I have some ideas on what might be possible but I haven't explored them yet.

So for now, if 7.x-2.x is working for you, stay with it. When 3.x is ready to be tested, then I would say setup a dev site to try it out.
