It's a very easy data structure to support, and I wanted to quickly migrate variables from D5/6 using migrate_d2d. Requires #2256761: Add a destination handler for variables in Migrate module.

Is the idea that your concrete class would override query() to add a condition limiting it to the desired variables?

prepareRow() is doing nothing and can be omitted.

In our use case the implementing class used prepareRow() to return FALSE on the variables it didn't care about. Or it could override query I guess.
