How to make commands respect required fields?

I have Mailhandler set up, and have a command "tags" to add taxonomy terms to a node imported. My taxonomy field is required for normal node submission, but when imported from an email it creates the node even if the taxonomy field has not been filled out. Is there a way to make it so a node is not created if a required field is left empty? Thanks.
