Seems like this module would still be useful in D8. I guess there's a lot of dependencies that have to come first?

Not a 'lot' of dependencies, just some critical ones :)

Mailhandler and Feeds Comment Processor both depend on Feeds. So there needs to be either an 8.x release for Feeds, or we need to part ways with Feeds for Drupal 8. I haven't had much time to think about what a non-Feeds architecture would look like... it's a pretty gnarly problem.
