Many people think that when you leave the textearea after typing your text, this is automatically saved via AJaX.This is probably due to the little animation that occurs.
This UX problem could be solved by adding an help message at the top of the translate page indicating the user that he has to hit the "Save" button at the bottom of the page.

Any other suggestions are welcome!

Well Ajaxifying the textarea would result in more and more suggestions, maybe some of them will not even be finished.
We need to think about that, maybe ask the users?

To myself. I'm more like the textarea keeps expend when it's edited or editing. #1228398: Keep textarea expanded when editing suggestion

textareas contracted imply "Ajax saved" but expending wouldn;t.
