I just downloaded joomla to drupal v2.1 and tried running it on MAMP. When configuring it to use a joomla DB that has a space in the name it does not work and report with a user warning. Once I changed the DB name I was able to import the users.

Closing this,since 5.x is not supported anymore.
If the bug persists on 6.x or 7.x please re-open the issue changing versions
