Can not modify user object with hook_invite while escalating invitation

It is nice to have the invite hook. With its help I wanted to modify the user object (set some profile fields) but finally after setting/saving the user object it was not really set. It seems that a latter operation is overriding the changes made by the hook (maybe there are different copies of the user object, in which the profile values I set aren't set).
