I have a system where different roles have different registration forms (hook_user, not profile) and I need to be able to specify which role - presumably in the link in the invitation that goes out. I suppose it would need to be interpreted by the user hook function, since I'm not aware that Drupal has a built-in way to specify roles prior to registration.

It would be very useful for some roles, sending invitations to be able to choose the role that receive an invitation. And on the basis of this choice form letter invitation.
For example:
Users with the role "teacher", may invite a "teachers" or "students", etc.
