Basically insert view works great but it seems to ignore some stuff explicitly set for a special display. I've set the number of posts to limit to 3 for the display i use when inserting the view instead of displaying it on other places. In the view preview everything works fine and i see 3 posts. After inserting the view with [view:viewname=displayname=arg] i get 6 (all) view results.

you should check that you are using the correct name of the view display.
on the view edit page move you mouse cursor above the display tab, in the browser's status bar you should see something like

.../admin/build/views/edit/myview#views-tab-page_1

where page_1 is the display name, and that should be used in the insertview filter

That works great. thanks. Did i miss the information about that fact anywhere or is it undocumented. Probably it can be placed in a more visible place.

[view:name of view=name of display] invokes the view using the specified display (see README.TXT for more info).
