I recall Bojan Z stating that "the existing entityreference integration should allow the 'Reference existing' autocomplete to pull results from a view".

This works for me except that the image in the view is not being displayed in the list of autocomplete results. I tested this view with an entity reference field and the image is displayed; just not with IEF. I don't believe it is an issue with access because I display the image in the IEF table (after attached).

However, my users need to see this image when searching for the existing node. Any ideas why this won't show?

Sounds like #2118841: Autocomplete is too agressive in stripping the results list, can you try the patch there?
