instead the page reloads all the time with "Directory is empty" notice. If the file exceeds the limit I get totally no information. My u* directory is indeed empty, automatically created by imce, however I've also tried critical temporary chmod 777 solution.

For reference I try demo on this page http://www.answers4families.org/imce/browse and it seems to work ok.

Anybody know what may be the cause?

this might be related to your server settings. check php's upload related config.
