im looking to desaturate a image by 80%, I know this is a long shot but could you advise me how to do this pls ? I ended up desaturating then color shifting the image but it's not quite there, it's not giving me the look.

This is not a feature available from GD. It only provides greyscale and colorize.
You may get an ok effect by placing a half-transparent white mask over your image? That works OK when I do it in CSS, produces a desaturated effect.

Or there may be some code library out on the web you could find and adapt...
