The problem I have with the current implementation of galleries is only that the user interface is rather constraining. I don't like it that image.module currently forces you to associate one and only one vocabulary as your "gallery" vocabulary.

Our current thinking is that gallery features will be split off from image.module, but not until after the 4.5 release. We're leaving the navigation as-is for now.

i'm trying to clean up the image module's issue queue. this issue looks like it's been resolved by more recent versions of the module. feel free to re-open this if you disagree.
