module update to existing site. no additional modules added.

The file includes/image.inc is part of core -- nothing to do with image module.

well, the error did not occur until i installed the latest Image update. doesn't image ref that file?

Quite possibly, but the point is that once you're in a core file, the validity of function calls is down to core.

http://api.drupal.org/api/function/image_gd_check_settings is a core function. Sounds like you've lost a file.
