Image Module: update.php generates error despite Image module not even being enabled?

Just to let you know...

Uploaded image module but did not enable it, although other modules such as Admin menu and views were enabled. When I ran update.php it reported a recoverable error:-

..Call to undefined function image_get_sizes()...
