Currently I can only place the "original" image into a node post. It appears in the same place each time.

It would be great if we could set which size image (thumbnail, custom size) to embed into the post and, optionally, how we would like it embedded (float:right, exact placement like img_filter, etc)

did you look in the node settings: admin/content/node-type/story ? there's a whole set of options for displaying what where... on the other hand if those aren't working re-open this as a bug report.
