After Drupal complained about security updates ("Installed: 7.x-1.2 / Recommended: 7.x-2.4") and the standard update procedure did not help (although "Success" was reported on each and every retry), I completely uninstalled the Module, downloaded the latest version (here: https://ftp.drupal.org/files/projects/google_analytics-7.x-2.4.zip) and re-installed.
Then I reconfigured the module and tested it: it is properly reporting page visits to Google, everything looking fine.

But: Drupal is still complaining that I've installed 7.x-1.2 and that I should upgrade. What should I do?

Search your folders. There need to be the old version somewhere. delete the old folder.
