If the custom icon path is wrong it results in not displaying the google map. The attached patch places a prefix before the path field to help the admin. Further it validates on an existing file at the given path.

This is a cool new feature. I removed the check for whether or not the user has checked the 'use_icon' field. IMO it doesn't matter if it is checked or not. The path should be valid either way.
