Change default control type to a custom type.

Hi,
I don't know whether there is a way to change the default controls icon to the one used at http://maps.google.com/ (see attachment) or any other custom icon.
I have been going through the issues trying to figure out how to do this.

I would be grateful if you could direct me as to how to do this.
