the problem is my site white screens when i select the openlayers input widget on a geofield. the site also white screens when i try to add new content with this configuration. if i set the widget to lat/long i can enter data on the form but the node view displays a map and no location graphic.

Same problem. Probably you can see PHP errors in your web server logs.
Also the problem exists when I select "geocode from another field" widget from geocoder module.

I get this on a node view:

Actually, the integration between geofield and openlayers is now doen in a submodule of openlayers.

Until now, the code in geofield was not cleaned up leading to confusion.

You can use openlayers 3.x but apply the provided patch here to geofield 2.3 and enable the module openlayers_geofield.

Don't forget to clear the cache and eventually a registry rebuild. Then you can go to edit your display again or whatever.
