thumbnails take me back to the main page

i've got a perculiar problem. after having set my gallery.module url rewrites to gallery/%itemid% (can't remember if itemid% bit is exactly right, i left that alone) instead of v/%itemid% and experiencing a multitude of problems, i found out that the module didn't like that unless you manually alter the .htaccess file. the module itself worked, as long as only the thumbnails were clicked on i.e. non of the menu items worked.

anyway, after trying the fix for that, i gave up and completely uninstalled the module from drupal (as in deleted it as well) and started again. this time i have it all set up right, all the green OK text comes up where it should, and my url-rewrites are more like gallery/v/%itemid% (my set up is gallery2 in a subfolder of drupal, located at the root, and the gallery.module in the drupal /modules folder).

My problem is ironic in that now the menu items work flawlessly, but when i click on the thumbnails none of them load up the right pages and just take me back to the front page. When I click on the random image that loads up fine, as do the menu links.

I can see whats happening. The thumbnail links add an extra '/' trailing slash to the end of the links. I'm sure this can be edited in the .htaccess file but i dont know how (the module probably needs some tweaking too). Anyone who can help, please do.
