I was hoping there was a way to create a field type so we can relate a content type to a certain flag. I'm hoping for functionality like that of Organic Groups, where you can select which group you'd like to post the content to. Organic Groups doesn't work for my needs because I need basically private, personal contact groups and I used the Flag module to accomplish this. I'm hoping to post some content to these private contact Flag groups, so I need a field when creating content that would show which flags the user has created, and be able to just show the content to that certain flagged group.

Any ideas for creating a custom field type and widget for a flag?

I daresay you could react on flag creation and define a content type then, and then act on flagging and create a node to match the flagging. Same sort of idea as the contrib module that creates nodes in sync with terms.
