I am not sure if this is by design or not, but when I have a directory created and no files existed within the created directory, a space appears in the AJAX dir tree. I have attached a screenshot and you can see the behavior under '2004' and 'Events'.

I have tried to fix this myself but don't know enough and gave up.

Try line 616:

    echo " ";

Just remove the whole line if you'd like. It was added for compatibility with Safari.
