I allow users to upload both images and videos in their nodes. When a user uploads an image that’s larger in size than the maximum allowed, he gets a message but is still allowed to select another image via “browse” to eventually upload. Now, if a user attempts to upload a video file that’s larger in size than the maximum allowed, he gets a message but is no longer given the opportunity to select another video file because “browse” is no longer present. So if he wants to upload a different video file, he’ll have to refresh the page to do so. Something like this is very inconvenient for users. I would like to know what’s going on and how I can fix the problem. Please see the attachment.

quicksketchUnfortunately there's nothing that can be done to correct this problem, since when a file upload fails utterly like this FileField doesn't have enough information to restore the original field. On your server-side configuration, you can try increasing the file upload size further, since this problem only occurs when exceeding the overall size the server supports. In such a situation, PHP throws away EVERYTHING, including $_POST and $_FILES variables, making it impossible for FileField to recover from this problem.
This problem could be fixed by core if its AHAH framework had better error handling, but I don't think such a change will ever occur within the Drupal 6 branch.
I'm closing this issue directly considering it's age (sorry for the delayed response). Please reopen if you have further questions on this topic.
